Contemporary rhythm and blues (R&B) is the third most popular genre in the United States based on album consumption. There is a good reason for that, as some of the biggest names in music continue to release songs in the genre.
Lizzo is one of the biggest names in the R&B game, even though she is commonly tossed in with pop stars.

Her album, Cuz I Love You, is considered by the Academy to be an R&B project.

That album was also nominated in 2019 for Album of the Year alongside H.E.R.’s self-titled L.P. and Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer.

New artists continue to appear on the scene. Kaash Paige is a promising artist, coming in with low-riding beats like “64”

and fan-favorite “Love Songs.

Then is Jack Harlow, who teamed up with Bryson Tiller to launch the hit “Thru the Night.”

That leaves out so many others like Che Ecru

Pop Smoke

Lil Keed

and Lucky Daye, to just name a few.

All of those are devoted R&B artists, but the genre is even expanding into the mainstream. With Justin Bieber’s “Yummy”

and elements of the genre showing up in songs from Ariana Grande,

Khalid, and more, it seems as though R&B is getting hard to pin into one genre.

This expansion of the sounds can only be good news for fans of R&B, and it certainly looks to continue in 2020.
