When one thinks about collegiate sports, their mind doesn’t often go to video games. However, perhaps it should be. The esports industry is one of the fastest-growing out there and needs more participants to continue that growth. Colleges are one way that these participants can get into the industry. The question is, what does the future of these collegiate gamers look like?

There are already some colleges, such as Harrisburg University, that offer full-ride scholarships for their teams.

Meanwhile, the University of Utah hands out $1,000 a year to each of the participating in its Esports curriculum. And it only looks like the scholarships will increase as more teams accept the growing E-leagues.

Esports is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. The industry breached $1 billion in revenue in 2019 and has continued growing.

While president Mike Emmert says that it is due to a concern of violence, it seems more likely that they don’t because the gaming tournaments give out cash prizes to the winners. Until it can make more money for the school (and NCAA), it seems unlikely to do so anytime soon.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) has continued to grow and seems ready to continue that growth. It had over 80 member universities in 2019 and is primed for even more to join.

Tournaments, and scholarships all across the United States.
