Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is an unfortunate disease that has no known cure. What’s worse about this condition is, there is no known cause of ALS. The only leading theory behind the origin of ALS is “genetics.”

ALS is a known disorder of the nervous system. This disease goes after the nerve cells in both the brain and the spinal cord. When these nerve cells are damaged, they have issues controlling the muscles in the body. Many people end up dying of respiratory failure because the chest muscles essentially “forget” how to breathe. That’s why many people who have ALS have to use some form of ventilation, whether its invasive or non-invasive. Those who have ALS also have difficulty communicating as their tongue, lips, and vocal cords have weakened. It’s not a disease to be taken lightly.

However, medical marijuana may be the answer to relieving some symptoms of ALS. Cannabis has been found to reduce inflammation and act as an antioxidant to protect and strengthen the weakening nerve cells.

People who have ALS also have an issue with sleeping and eating, both symptoms that medical marijuana can help treat. Taking medical marijuana for cannabis can improve a patient’s quality of life. Instead of taking painkillers that end up hurting the liver over time, cannabis can be an effective alternative to pain.

ALS can affect individuals in different ways; that’s why it’s essential to go over which method of taking medical marijuana works best to alleviate symptoms. Vaping is the fastest way to receive cannabis benefits, but it’s not recommended for ALS patience who are experiencing respiratory symptoms. Edibles may take longer to take effect but are among the safest ways methods for people with ALS.

ALS patients can also take topicals for muscle pain relief.
